Isolation and Country Drives

One of the biggest challenges in dealing with my chronic conditions is not being able to leave the flat much.

Between my nausea and vomiting, intense fatigue, and difficulty walking because of my balance issues, it can be hard to get out.

Leaving the flat means ensuring that I have sick bags with me, and am able to get down the flight of stairs to the main door. Then, I have to get my rollator walker outside. I can manage this if I’m alone, but it can be tricky. After all this, I have to walk down the road, and the last several months I have only been able to walk a short distance before getting so fatigued that my legs feel like they will give out.

Being stuck inside a small flat day after day, can be hard, even for an introvert. I try to go for walks, but I can only do so when I’m up to it, and that’s not as often as I’d like.

I do various things to keep myself occupied, however sometimes it’s nice to get outside into the big world out there.

So, this past Monday, a bank holiday, I felt well enough to to go out, and it was a nice day out, so my husband took me for a drive in the countryside.

It was lovely to see some different sights, breathe fresh air, and go for a little adventure! It was refreshing mentally and emotionally to get out and do something a bit different, and it out a smile on my face.

When chronic conditions isolate you, little things like going for an evening drive can feel like wonderful break from the monotony of pain and illness, and I look forward to some more trips out.

  1. I am more able to get out and about than you, but I can still appreciate the issues with leaving the house with a chronic illness, and you’re right, it can be very isolating. I’m so glad you felt well enough to get out over the bank holiday and enjoy a little change of scenery! 🙂

  2. I absolutely understand the joy of country drives when disability has you house bound!! I have never heard anyone write or speak about this but it has been such a huge part of my life for so long. Thanks for making me feel a little bit understood, and a little less alone 🙂

    1. I am so glad that you connected to what I wrote and felt less alone. You definitely aren’t!

I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one that appreciates how healing a drive can be when you are house bound. Have a wonderful day. ❤

  3. I completely understand this. I have to work from home now, and it’s very isolating. I long forward to getting away from the house for a bit, seeing new things and giving my mind something else to think about. My favourite place to go is the beach, it’s my relaxing place!

    1. It’s nice to know I’m not alone, although I’m also sorry that you can relate to feeling isolated! It is wonderful to get out of the house, isn’t it? I love the beach too. I wish we lived closer to it. ☺
